Maths for Teachers

Everyone knows that practice makes perfect. Everyone also knows that immediate feedback is much more effective than feedback that comes hours, days or weeks later.

What most people also know but don’t apply is that practising in private, where you can make mistakes, is very much better than risking failure in public.

So we have taken these principles and applied them to our pet subject – mathematics.

The online environment we have created here is where you can practise away in private, get immediate feedback, and improve your math without even realising it. You select the question that you want to try, the system will immediately mark your answer, and if you get it wrong you can try exactly the same question again, or if you prefer you can try a slightly different variant. You go where you like, try what you like and try as often as you like.

From our – many years of – experience we know where most people have the most trouble. To help you we have selected a very large range of questions for those problem areas. This great variety means that no matter how often you practise you are unlikely to see exactly the same question twice, unless you particularly want to.

We have grouped the questions into four broad areas, and the questions do get harder as you move up the groups. Treat it like a computer game. Can you move to the next level? Can you conquer the system at all levels? If you can we will feel this is a job well done.

Being good and competent in mathematics is not elitist. But it is empowering and enriching, and quite literally will improve job and career prospects. We are not motivated by politics but we do think that political interference is a contributory factor to falling standards. However, the purpose of this web site is not to air political views, it is to help you improve your mastery of numeracy.
